CHAPTER 10: AND SO IT BEGINS

“Kail, I’m scared,” Delphia whispered, fidgeting in place beside me.

She held her favourite blue gloves in her hands tightly, scrunching them up to relieve stress. Over the years, they had been used so many times to comfort her that the material had torn and frayed. I began to wonder if they had ever actually been used to keep her hands warm.

“Don’t be scared,” I whispered back, keeping my eyes on our doorway and listening intently for any footsteps. “They’ll be really nice and like us, and then we can go away with them.”

“You say that every time,” she muttered, probably reminiscing about all the other times I had told her such things. How many times I had lied to her...

I snapped out of my memory and once again realized I was back in the orphanage. It was getting more difficult to pull myself out of the memory and remember that I was actually still dreaming. It just all felt so real, like I was living it for the first time and just happened to know what was coming next. It was a little unnerving going through the motions of my life, knowing what was around the corner without being able to change anything. If I wasn’t able to change anything as I wanted to, then why did this keep happening to me?

“I think I hear someone,” Delphia said, excitement and anxiety in her voice.

She hastily shoved her gloves into her pocket and grabbed my hand with hers. I could feel her warmth in my hand. It was the first time I had been able to hold my sister in over ten years. My heart felt as though it would burst through my chest. I wanted to scream or cry or laugh, but I didn’t know what to do. It was like finding something precious that I had thought lost so very long ago, and hoping that I would never let go of it again.

“Now, remember,” I told her quietly and calmly. “Just be yourself, and they’ll like you.”

“What if they don’t like me?” she asked, sadly looking down at the floor.

“Well, then at least I’ll still like you,” I replied without missing a beat. That was nice of me to say, I thought to myself.

“Yeah, but you’re my brother,” she whispered. I looked down at her and she looked up at me simultaneously. Our eyes met and produced a smile on both of our faces. Yeah, I thought to myself, and I still am. Always will be.

The footsteps stopped right outside our door, snapping our attention away from each other. Even though I knew what would come of this meeting, it was still an odd feeling to witness the first encounter I had with people I would know for the rest of my life. If I could only find a way to alter this moment, I would perhaps be able to change what would inevitably...

The door creaked open slowly, inch by inch, revealing who was behind it.
